How does neurofeedback help?

Neurofeedback therapy mends abnormalities in brain activation, leading to ASD symptom reduction and functional improvement. Many symptoms of ASD patients are coping mechanisms used to help the patient feel self-control in response to overwhelming stimuli. Neurofeedback trains the brain to function and process new information calmly, reducing or eliminating ASD symptoms, including:

  • Stimming
  • Emotional outbursts
  • Speech issues
  • Ritualistic behavior
  • Intolerance to change
  • Hyperactivity
  • Impulsivity
  • Inability to follow/regard direction from authority figures
  • Anxiety
  • Issues with social skills

In addition to reducing ASD symptoms, improvements in brain patterns from Neurofeedback improve cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and physiological symptoms, including:

  • Headaches
  • Stress (including post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • Inattention
  • Addiction
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Depression
  • Aggressive behaviors
  • Seizure

The effects and results of neurofeedback therapy should be monitored carefully. Autistic spectrum disorder is a variable disorder, so success of therapy will vary on a case by case basis. Our natural health practitioners work with patients to study results and adjust treatment as necessary.

Neurofeedback for Autism Protocol

In a neurofeedback session, electrodes are placed on the patient’s scalp to record brain waves. The patient sits still in a comfortable chair in front of a computer screen. The computer screen displays a video, and the patient can see their brain waves while watching the video. Desirable brain wave changes (brain waves more like those of people without ASD) are rewarded by the video continuing. Negative brain wave changes are discouraged by stopping the video.

Certain settings are adjusted each session based on results. We will change the brain wave frequency targeted and the location of scalp placement to target different regions of the brain. Specific treatment will vary based on individual symptoms and results. It can take several sessions to determine optimal frequency.

Benefits of neurofeedback therapy are generally cumulative and increase gradually over time. Up to 20 sessions can be required to recognize results. However, some individuals report changes within a few sessions.

Why neurofeedback therapy?

Brain science has shown that repetitive exercise of brain networks reshapes the brain. While medications treat symptoms of ASD, they won’t correct the source of the symptoms. Through neurofeedback therapy, we can provide an EEG brain map showing the reason for difficulties. Electrodes and brain wave frequencies allow us to target and improve functioning in specific areas of the brain on a case by case basis.

The American Academy of Pediatrics notices neurofeedback as a Level 1 “Best Support” Intervention for the treatment of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The National Institute of Health lists more than 450 peer-review publications in neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback is simple, painless, and noninvasive. All Neurotherapy sessions at our natural health clinics are individualized to our client’s needs.

Please contact us at our New Berlin or Menomonee Falls location to schedule neurofeedback therapy.
