More than 10 years ago, TIME magazine published an article called Cellular Inflammation: The Secret Killer. The article explained a revolutionary new idea – the link between many diseases and chronic inflammation.
Our bodies use inflammation as a natural mechanism to fight bacteria, viruses, and parasites. When we are exposed to a pathogen, our immune system springs into action, triggering an inflammatory reaction that attacks the invader so healing can begin. This process was designed to keep us healthy, and generally, it works. However, while our environment has evolved to include processed foods, chemicals, plastics, pesticides, and other pollutants, our bodies have essentially remained the same. We are not able to process these new substances very well. Plus, our sedentary lifestyles have led to weight gain and an overall decline in health among Americans in general.
Pharmaceutical companies have developed many new drugs to treat the diseases that our lifestyles have triggered. It’s impossible to watch TV without seeing ads for drugs related to Alzheimer’s, migraines, diabetes, arthritis, or psoriasis. But what if instead of treating the symptoms of these diseases, we could address the cause? That’s the excitement of the science of cellular inflammation. We now understand that constant exposure to toxins causes our cells to become inflamed. For example, some inflammatory triggers have an affinity for fatty tissues. The cell wall is made of fatty tissues. Substances such as hydrogenated fats, which are hidden in all kinds of commercial foods, stay in the body for a long time and cause a film on the cell wall. This leads to oxidation and inflammation of the cell. Reducing exposure to triggering substances can help prevent chronic inflammation, which has been linked to many diseases.
Fortunately, there are ways to gauge the severity of inflammation in the body. If you are experiencing chronic, unexplained symptoms, inflammation may be the cause. Once you understand the level of toxicity in your body and the substances that are triggering inflammatory symptoms, you can work towards eliminating those toxins. Don’t be afraid of the process. It is possible to make incremental changes over time that will lead you towards a healthier lifestyle. If you’re wondering where to start, give us a call.
