Can Neurofeedback Help With My Anxiety?

Authored by: Mona Eberle Naturopathic Practitioner, Nutritional Therapist, Certified NFB Clinician.

One of the main health complaints we see in our Neurofeedback clinic is uncontrolled, unrelenting anxiety. Anxiety for little or no reason, out of the blue, anytime day or night. The symptoms associated with this anxiety are wide-ranging, from rapid heartbeats to panic attacks, stomach aches and nausea, mind racing, memory lapses, headaches, migraines, an inability to concentrate, irritability, and difficulty sleeping. Can you relate to any of these symptoms?

Doctors are quick to prescribe medication but unlike medication, Neurofeedback teaches the brain to work differently, resulting in significant improvements. It is a guided exercise for the brain that is shown to help normalize irregular brainwaves. With Neurofeedback, as you learn to self-regulate, anxious symptoms begin to reduce.

How Neurofeedback Works

Our Neurofeedback protocol begins with a QEEG brain map, a non-invasive and painless process that allows us to record the electrical activity in the brain. This EEG activity is then statistically analyzed and compared against a reference database. The analysis highlights variations from the norm, identifying areas in the brain with too much or too little EEG activity. In the case of anxiety, someone may show high levels of beta, a very focused brainwave, but too much beta activity and beta in the wrong brain hemisphere can make a person feel anxious and stressed.

Based on your QEEG brain map results, a protocol is designed to specifically address your concerns and brain irregularities. Through the use of computers and a television screen, we are able to measure brainwave activity and then reinforce healthy brain waves with visual and auditory stimuli. Like Biofeedback, Neurofeedback relies on positive reinforcement, encouraging, and rewarding the brain for new behavior. Neurofeedback does not “brainwash” you – it only makes suggestions to the brain and lets your brain decide whether or not to respond to the stimulation given.

One of the first things we hear from our Neurofeedback clients is that they feel much calmer and don’t overreact in stressful situations. Some even tell us they are sleeping better. With continued training, we see our clients develop a positive outlook on life, more focused energy, a willingness to try new things, and new skills to cope with their anxiety. Neurofeedback is not a panacea, but along with the other natural therapies we teach our clients, it can make a significant improvement in the quality of their life.
