Meet Mona

Mona has 20+ years of experience in Naturopathic Health and Nutrition across the US and Europe. She holds a BSc in Exercise Physiology from the University of Munich, an MSc in Health Fitness Management and Nutrition from American University in WD and an MSc in Naturopathic Nutritional Therapy from the College of Naturopathic Medicine, Dublin, Ireland.

Mona’s journey in Natural Health began with a love for all things nutrition, a search for good health, and a passion to transform people’s lives for the better. Her compassion stems from her own life’s journey. Mona struggled with numerous ailments, starting with an eating disorder in my teens, years of chronic dieting and weight gain (I probably own every diet book printed!), and ended up with heavy metal toxicity that kick-started my autoimmune thyroid condition and chronic fatigue.  In 1998 she suffered a traumatic brain injury, which drove her into research and experimentation on how to restore brain health and brain function without the use of medication. Alzheimer’s is also a big concern in my family and having witnessed the deaths of several family members due to this terrible disease, Mona is highly motivated to keep my brain healthy. She eats well, exercises, and minds her stress. Although she still struggles with sleep, she lives to the best of her ability.

Over the past 20 years, Mona has helped many clients navigate their own personal health struggles and to find balance and healing in their lives.  She experiences joy and satisfaction as a natural health coach, educator, and health practitioner. It’s what she is called to do. Her strongest desire is to empower clients to become their own best health advocates. No one knows you better than you!  She can help you to take charge of your life, educate you to have the best understanding of your own health and what you can do to heal. It is her great desire to instill hope and a deep understanding of the innate ability of your body to heal anything.  She has witnessed countless miracles throughout her years of working with clients.  Simple changes in nutrition and lifestyle, a positive, kind, gentle approach to life, can bring about life-changing transformation.

Mona is blessed with 3 wonderful children, all born in Ireland.  Two of them still live there, so once a year she journeys to Ireland and Germany to touch base with family and friends.

Mona is not a particularly good cook, but she loves healthy REAL food and has learned several tricks to make quick, easy delicious meals without spending hours in the kitchen.  Mona enjoys reading recipes more than cooking them!

Mona loves and is so proud of the team at Total Health Nutrition Center.  Everyone has very diverse backgrounds and brings an exciting set of skills to the client base. The team collaborates and supports each other, and regularly brainstorms difficult client cases together.

In addition to nutritional consultations, the team has a variety of modalities available, to help people take back their health. Neurofeedback is an amazing tool to improve brain health and restore healthy brain wave function. The Blue Opal machine supports the client’s healing using frequency therapy.

Neurofeedback for Depression

Neurofeedback uses repetitive brain training exercises of the brain to reshape brainwave patterns while enhancing connections between neurons and networks. Neurofeedback has also been shown to improve the parasympathetic nervous system while slowing blood pressure and heart rate. Depending on severity it can take around 20-60 neurofeedback sessions to experience a reduction in depression symptoms.

Neurofeedback for OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by persistent and recurrent impulses as well as thoughts and images that are unwanted. An estimated 1% of the population has been diagnosed with OCD and between 1% and 3% of children and teens have been diagnosed with OCD.

Brain scans suggest people with OCD have abnormal activity in areas of the brain associated with strong emotions and reactions, making them more likely to overthink or think repetitively in a loop (hyper coherence). Neurofeedback is a great tool to manage symptoms of OCD because it helps clients train the affected areas of the brain.

Neurofeedback for ADHD

Medication does not cure ADHD. Medication only relieves symptoms. Long-term Neurofeedback therapy can help correct brainwave patterns and serve as a more sustainable approach to ADHD symptoms. Neurofeedback trains your brain to function correctly long-term.

This is perfect for adults and children—it’s non-invasive and there are no negative side effects.

Neurofeedback for Anxiety

Prolonged stress and anxiety have a negative impact on health marked by increased cortisol and adrenaline release, decreased production of certain growth hormones, and the abnormal activation of the immune system and inflammatory mediators in the body.

These can all exacerbate pre-existing health conditions such as IBS and increase cardiovascular risks. Chronic stress, along with other chronic illnesses (including cancer and pain), can increase morbidity and decrease the quality of life.

Neurofeedback (or Neurotherapy) targets anxiety by regulating the connection in the brain between the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex.

Neurofeedback for autism

Neurofeedback (NFB) treatment, also known as EEG biofeedback, is a computerized method of intensive brain training exercises used to track electrical activity of the brain. Using repetitive exercises, ASD patients learn how to control their own brain waves. The process is sophisticated, simple, painless, and noninvasive.

By learning how to control their brain waves, patients with ASD learn how to respond calmly to overwhelming stimuli. Neurofeedback treatment has been shown to reduce ASD symptoms and increase functioning of patients with ASD.

Neurofeedback for insomnia

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up. Insomnia impacts in 1 in 4 Americans each year. The most common illnesses causing poor sleep are psychiatric and medical conditions, including apnea and anxiety. Insomnia puts people at higher risk of accidents and diseases like hypertension and depression. The longer people live with insomnia, the harder it can be to treat.

Neurofeedback (NFB) for insomnia helps you return to normal patterns of sleep without medications. Brain mapping technology allows us to measure and observe brainwave imbalances. We’ll analyze and identify patterns in the brain functions contributing to sleep issues. Once we know what area of the brain is causing problems, we can use neurofeedback to retrain brain waves to transition the central nervous system smoothly from an awakened state to sleep.

All-natural thyroid remedies

Total Health has a high number of clients who are suffering from thyroid disease. This isn’t surprising—a majority of people who have thyroid disease are undiagnosed or are diagnosed incorrectly. Most doctors test for thyroid hormone levels through blood tests but just because the hormones are present in your body doesn’t mean that your body is processing the hormones correctly. Total Health diagnoses hormone irregularities and helps you correct them with integrative therapies.

Neurofeedback Therapy

Train your brain

Neurofeedback (also called biofeedback) is a drug-free, non-invasive technique that images the brain in real-time. Many psychological issues are associated with abnormal brainwave patterns. Unhealthy brainwaves can be retrained with Neurofeedback which often improves or even eliminates symptoms of psychological issues. We give clients activities to “shape” their brainwaves towards a more desirable performance.
